Descriptions and objectives

11/17/11 — Safety Survey: How Vulnerable Are You to a Needlestick?

Despite the implementation of safer blood collection devices in the industry, healthcare professionals are still sustaining accidental needlesticks. This presentation recognizes that only when unsafe behaviors are also addressed can facilities reduce their exposure rates to their lowest possible level. The presenter leads attendees through a discussion on the most common careless practices that contribute to accidental exposures in a self-assessment exercise that exposes their own risky behaviors, and those of their staff, that put them at risk.

Length: 60 mins. plus Q&A.

Level of Instruction: Basic

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the presentation, participants will be able to…

  1. identify common practices that can lead to accidental needlesticks;
  2. discuss the OSHA requirements for preventing exposures;
  3. modify their blood collection practices to reduce their vulnerability to accidental needlesticks.

12/13/11 — Preanalytical Benchmarks: How Does Your Lab Compare?

How does your hemolysis rate compare to other facilities' rates? How well are you doing on reducing identification errors compared to other hospitals? This presentation summarizes the literature on the rates of hemolysis, specimen rejection, blood culture contamination, patient/sample identification errors, preanalytical turnaround times, and patient satisfaction. The presenters conclude with suggestions on process improvement for select indicators.

Length: 60 mins. plus Q&A.

Level of Instruction: Advanced

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the presentation, participants will be able to…

  1. define industry benchmarks on six key preanalytical quality indicators;
  2. compare their facility's preanalytical processes against benchmarks established by other facilities;
  3. implement a strategy to address poorly performing indicators.

1/17/12 — The Ten Commandments of Phlebotomy

Phlebotomy is a highly detailed invasive procedure with many rules that must be followed in order for the sample to be drawn safely and in a way that doesn't alter test results. But if there were to be ten commandments for phlebotomy, what would they be? In this webinar, the presenter proposes ten 10 rules of specimen collection that must be followed without fail and why. Topics include discussions on vein selection, customer service, patient and sample identification, technique, safety and more.

Length: 60 mins. plus Q&A.

Level of Instruction: Intermediate

Learning objectives: At the conclusion of the presentation, participants will be able to…

  1. list at least ten important considerations all phlebotomists must employ when drawing blood;
  2. evaluate their understanding of key concepts in specimen collection;
  3. discuss the CLSI standards and OSHA guidelines as they pertain to specific aspects of specimen collection.

2/14/12 — Seizing Control of Blood Culture Contamination Rates

Do you have too many contaminated blood cultures? Do you need strategies to reduce them in your facility? You're not alone. On average, treating patients for false-positive blood cultures cost hospitals $5000 in unnecessary antibiotic therapy and laboratory tests. They also extend the patient's hospital stay by 4.5 days.
     This webinar discusses the most common causes of blood culture contamination and strategies to reduce contamination rates in your facility, even where phlebotomy services have been decentralized. Length: 50 mins. plus Q&A.

Level of Instruction: Intermediate

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the presentation, participants will be able to…

  1. identify the common causes of contaminated blood cultures;
  2. discuss ways to reduce contamination rates;
  3. describe the proper procedure for preparing a site for blood culture collection.
