Dennis J. Ernst MT(ASCP) is the Executive Director of the Center for Phlebotomy Education, Inc.
Besides being a highly recruited international lecturer, he has authored of over 50 articles on phlebotomy, two textbooks and a desk reference. He chairs the CLSI working groups that write the standards for specimen collection , has participated on several CDC Best Practices panels addressing preanalytical issues, and serves as the editor of the Phlebotomy Today family of newsletters, read monthly by over 15,000 subscribers worldwide.

Lisa O. Ballance, BS, MT(ASCP), CLC(AMT), is a certified laboratory consultant with expertise in the preanalytical phase of clinical laboratory testing developed during her service as Director of Online Education at the Center for Phlebotomy Education and as a Regional Consultant for the Laboratory Improvement Unit of the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health. Prior to her consulting position, she served in management and supervisory positions in both public health and hospital laboratory settings.
Ballance has served as a volunteer member of several CLSI working groups that revise blood collection standards, given numerous presentations at state and national laboratory conferences, and authored more than a dozen articles published in a wide variety of laboratory publications.

3/7/13 — Phlebotomy C.S.I. (Challenging Sticks Investigation)
Presenter: Lisa Steinam PTB(ASCP)
Presented in a case study format, participants are led through “investigations” of some of the more common blood specimen collection challenges phlebotomists face. Tips to successfully meet the challenges of each case study are examined. Discussions include difficult draws, unconventional settings, patient responses, communication barriers, and "solving the crime" of improper specimen collection, handling and transport.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
- List four types of patient challenges encountered;
- Identify practices that kill sample quality and accurate results;
- Assess their specimen collection techniques to reduce preanalytical errors and the risk of patient injury.
