"I draw blood for a living. What am I?"

A newly released video underscores the critical importance phlebotomists play in patient care.

The Center for Phlebotomy Education's latest video, A Video Tribute to Phlebotomists,  underscores the critical importance every phlebotomist plays in laboratory testing and patient care. Narrated by the Center's director, Dennis J. Ernst MT(ASCP), NCPT(NCCT), the seven-minute video recognizes phlebotomists everywhere as professionals who practice the most commonly performed invasive procedure in healthcare.

"Most patients and healthcare professionals don't fully appreciate how valuable and important phlebotomists are to patient care," says Ernst. "Lab results obtained on the samples they draw are used to orchestrate the activities of nearly every healthcare professional involved with every patient they draw. Without those who draw blood samples, healthcare cannot function."

Educators and supervisors are encouraged to show the video to their students, staff, and new hires to make sure they realize the critical nature of what they do. The video is accessible on the Center's web site and its YouTube channel.
