What's Wrong Here?

Can you spot the technical error in this image?

by Dennis Ernst

This image depicts a child being drawn with his arm not supported on a hard surface. When venipunctures are performed without supporting the arm, the patient is likely to move during needle insertion or before the procedure is completed. Movement at any time can cause the needle to pierce or lacerate nerve, tendons, and arteries leading to catastrophic injuries. Some can be permanent. Always position every patient's arm on the bed or a stationary surface for support.
